The breeding distribution includes Sable Island, Nova Scotia, and Bermuda. The species also breeds in the Netherlands Lesser Antilles (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao) and on other islands off the coast of Venezuela. It also breeds widely in Europe, Asia, and northwestern Africa, wintering in Africa, south Asia, and Australia.
