Distribution in the Americas
L. amethystinus is a resident species found in montane areas from northern Mexico (in Nayarit, San Luis Potosi, and southern Tamaulipas) south to Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. It is estimated that the total range of the Amethyst-throated Hummingbird is approximately 190,000 km2 (BirdLife International 2011).
The elevational range occupied by the Amethyst-throated Hummingbird in Mexico is 900-3000 m (Howell and Webb 1995).
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Amethyst-throated Hummingbirds occupy montane evergreen and pine-oak forests, and forest edge (Binford 1989, Howell and Webb 1995).
