Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

As the English name suggests, the distribution of Ancash Tapaculo is centered on the Cordillera Blanca in the department of Ancash, in the western Andes of central Peru. Recently its distribution has been extended slightly to the north (central La Libertad), east (western Huánuco), and south (northern Lima) (Nolazco et al. 2014).

The elevational distribution of Ancash Tapaculo is 3000-4600 m (Schulenberg et al. 2010).

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to the Americas.

Habitat

Ancash Tapaculo occupies high elevation grass tussocks and grassy boulder fields, often in or near open woodland (Polylepis sp.) or shrubs (Gynoxys) (Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990, Krabbe and Schulenberg 2003, Schulenberg et al. 2010).
