Described as Scytalopus magellanicus affinis Zimmer 1939; type locality Yánac, Ancash, Peru, 13,000 feet [3962 m]
Zimmer (1939) and subsequent authors (e.g. Peters 1951, Meyer de Schauensee 1996), recognized a highly polytpic Scytalopus magellanicus (Magellanic Tapaculo), within which they classified many taxa of small Scytalopus distributed from Venezuela south to southernmost Chile and Argentina. Krabbe and Schulenberg (1997) revised the taxonomy and nomenclature of many taxa of Scytalopus, based primarily on differences between populations in vocalizations and in elevational distributions. With regard to the complex of taxa previously included in magellanicus, Krabbe and Schulenberg (1997) elevated most taxa, including affinis, to species rank.
