Behavior

Introduction

Poorly known. Flight is described as rather slow, often with stiff wings and regular gliding (Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990).  Frequently flies in small groups, feeding over water or around herds of grazing animals.

Territoriality

Little information. Nests in colonies; the colonies usually are small (Krabbe, in Turner and Rose 1989), but one "quite a large colony" has been reported from Chile (Johnson 1967). Colony size perhaps limited by the availability of nesting sites (Krabbe, in Turner and Rose 1989).

Sexual Behavior

No information.

Social and interspecific behavior

Frequently flies in small groups (Ridgely and Tudor 1989, Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990), sometimes associated with other species of swallows (Ridgely and Tudor 1989). "Often" forages around groups of grazing mammals, both domestic (cattle, sheep, llamas) and wild (vicuña) (Ridgely and Tudor 1989).

Predation

No information.
