Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
The Andean Swallow is found in the high Andes, from central Peru south to northwestern Argentina. The northernmost limit is in the southern part of the department of Ancash, Peru (Schulenberg et al. 2007). In Chile it is restricted to the altiplano to Tarapacá (Jaramillo 2003).
The typical elevational range of the Andean Swallow is from about 3100-4600 m; it may descend lower when not breeding, as suggested by the occasional records in July down to 2500 m in Arequipa (Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990).
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Andean Swallows are found in open habitats of the altiplano, such as puna grasslands, desert puna, and tola heaths; they also occur around towns and buildings (Ridgely and Tudor 1989, Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990, Schulenberg et al. 2007) . Andean Swallows often forage over water (Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990, Jaramillo 2003).
