Introduction

Amid much controversy, the recently-described Urrao Antpitta already has been assigned two scientific names and at least three common names. It is a Colombian endemic, known only from a tiny area in the northern tip of the western Andes. Almost nothing is known about is basic biology other than what has been published with its original description. It appears to be most closely related to another Colombian endemic, Brown-banded Antpitta (G. milleri), and presumably has similar ecological attributes. An inhabitant of seasonally dry, montane cloudforest, where it is partial to areas of Chusquea bamboo, Urrao Antpitta appears to breed during the drier months, but its nest and eggs still are undescribed.
