Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

Azure-crowned Hummingbird occurs from eastern Mexico south to northern Nicaragua, primarily in the foothills and highlands. It is occurs along the Atlantic slope from San Luis Potosí (at least during the nonbreeding season) and southern Tamaulipas, Mexico, south to Honduras (Friedmann et al. 1950, Russell 1964, Monroe 1968, Howell and Webb 1995); and on the Pacific slope and in interior valleys from eastern Oaxaca, Mexico, south to northwestern Nicaragua (Friedmann et al. 1950, Binford 1989, Howell and Webb 1995, Martínez-Sánchez and Will 2010). There also is a disjunct population in the lowlands of the Mosquitia region of southeastern Honduras and northeastern Nicaragua (Howell 1965, Monroe 1968).

Azure-crowned Hummingbird is primarily resident, but there may be local seasonal movements (e.g. Land 1963).

The elevational range of cyanocephala in Mexico is 600-2400 m (Howell and Webb 1995). The disjunct population (chlorostephana) of the Mosquitia occurs in the lowlands.

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to the Americas.

Habitat

Azure-crowned Hummingbird occurs in oak and pine-oak forests, scrub, second growth, the edge of humid evergreen forest, and, especially in the Mosquitia region, pine savannas (Howell 1972, Howell and Webb 1995).
