Introduction

The Azure-rumped Tanager is restricted to a small area of about 2500 km2 on the Pacific slope of Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico, where it occurs in the altitudinal belt between 800-1900 m. The species inhabits primarily humid broadleaf forest, but occurs also in adjacent human-altered habitat, such as shade coffee plantations. Nesting is synchronized with the wet season. The Azure-rumped Tanager is an omnivore and feeds on fruit and arthropods. Although locally common, the species is Endangered because of its small range, and severely fragmented prime habitat.
