Diet and Foraging

Diet

Barred Parakeet feeds on seeds, but there is little detailed information on its diet. Ridgely (1981) observed "large numbers" feeding on seeding Chusquea bamboo in western Panama, and it may be associated with bamboo elsewhere in its range (Hilty and Brown 1986, Hilty 2003). In Costa Rica, also observed eating seeds, fruits, and buds of a variety of trees and shrubs, including Myrtis, Heliocarpus, and Miconia (Stiles and Skutch 1989).
