Conservation
Conservation Status
Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle does not have any characteristics that make it threatened. It has an extremely large range, the population trend appears to be stable, and it has a large population. Consequently the IUCN Red List status of this species is rated as Least Concern (BirdLife International 2011).
The relative abundance usually is assessed as uncommon to fairly common (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a, Hilty 2003, Schulenberg et al. 2010).
Effects of human activity on populations
Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle is affected by human hunting. Farmers kill the raptors because they believe they kill their livestock. It is also reported that humans kill these raptors as a recreational hunting activity (Jaksic and Jimenez 1986).
In Argentina the buzzard eagle has suffered from secondary poisoning directed at controlling pest mammal populations (Hiraldo et al. 1995).
