Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

The Beautiful Jay has a varied repertoire, although it can quiet at times (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001). A characteristic call is described as a "loud inflected chewp, often doubled" (Hitly and Brown 1986) or a "more emphatic chewp or tjik, often doubled" (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001). Other vocalizations include "guttural smacking and clicking notes" (Hilty and Brown 1986). Other vocalizations include grating calls. Pearman (1993) described "a double click followed by a rising whistle, followed immediately by a single click-whistle."

Nonvocal Sounds
