Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Berlepsch's Tinamou is resident in the lowlands of western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. The distribution extends from northwestern Antioquia and central Chocó in Colombia south to Esmeraldas and Pichincha in Ecuador (Meyer de Schauensee 1948, Blake 1955, Haffer 1975, Hilty and Brown 1986, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a).
Berlepsch's Tinamou is restricted to the lowlands. It primarily occurs below 500 m in Colombia, although it has been reported to as high as 900 m (Meyer de Schauensee 1948, Hilty and Brown 1986); in Ecuador it primarily is reported below 300 m (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a).
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Berlepsch's Tinamou occupies the floor of humid lowland evergreen forest, especially dense advanced second growth, forest borders, and "stream-rich forest sections" (Hilty and Brown, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a).
Historical changes
Berlepsch's Tinamou has disappeared from the (now isolated) forest at the Centro Cientifico Río Palenque in southern Pichincha, Ecuador (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a), where it reportedly occurred as recently as the 1970s and 1980s (Leck 1979).
