Breeding

Breeding season starts in March or April, and juveniles can be found in July. Owls do not build nests, but instread use cavities or natural holes and old woodpecker cavities. In June 2001 a nest were found in a natural cavity in an oak (Quercus laurina) of 74 cm DHB. Inside the nest were a reddish female and one gray chick, approximately 4 weeks old (Enríquez and Cheng 2008). No material had inside the cavity except for some insect remains; there were no feces or pellets inside the cavity or below the nest. This cavity was not used again. Two females captured in April with brood patches, and nest found in June, suggest that the incubation period begins in March-April and breeding season could finish by June.
