Subspecies

Related Species

Described as Dendrortyx barbatus Gould 1846; type locality Jalapa, Vera Cruz [Mexico]

Holman (1961) judged on ostelogical evidence that the genus Dendrortyx is the most generalized of the entire group of New World quail. The nearest relatives of the tree quails appear to be the forest-dwelling wood quail of the genus Odontophorus (Johnsgard 1973). Within the genus Dendrortyx, there is no clear evidence of relationship; all three species seem to be quite distinct from one another and the available evidence provides no overt clues as to their phylogenetic history (Johnsgard 1988).
