Breeding
Introduction
The only information available on the breeding activities of Black Inca from Macana-García et al. (2012) based on two nests. One nest was found at Arcabuco, department of Boyacá, which contained two white eggs, and the second nest was at Gámbita, Santander, and contained two nestlings. The cup-shaped nests are made of tree fern scales, held together with spider webs and decorated with moss fibers; the inner lining is plant down. The two nests were found in the interior of oak forest, one in an oak shrub at 1.5 m above the ground, and the second nest on a stalk of bamboo (Chusquea) at 1.75 m above the ground. These authors suspect that Black Inca may select intact oak forests for nesting sites.
The nests found by Macana-García et al. (2012) suggest that breeding of Inca Black occurs between December and February, but based on the study of specimens Collar et al. (1992) suggested that the breeding season is from between June and October; therefore, the breeding season of the species may be relatively long (Macana et al. 2012).
