Demography and Populations

Introduction

The world population of Black Inca is estimated as 3,500-15,000 individuals (BirdLife International 2013). On Cerro Carare, in the department of Boyacá, it is described as a common species whose population could be hundreds of individuals (King 1978-1979). From a mark/recapture study in the Reserva Biológica Cachalú, Daza and Villamarín (2006) estimate a density of 15 individuals per km2 in the remaining habitat of the reserve (ca 700 ha), for a total population size of 10,500 individuals. Moreover, taking into account the abundance of this species in five locations in the western slope of the Sierra of Yariguies, Donegan and Briceño (2005) consider that the total population for the mountains could be about 1000-2400 individuals. The species is recorded as locally common (Renjifo et al. 2002).
