Conservation

Although the known geographic range of Black Tinamou has increased significantly in recent years, with new localities expanding the distribution of both the northern and southern populations, the IUCN Red List status of Black Tinamou is classified as Vulnerable (BirdLife International 2014).

Although often considered to be rare, Black Tinamou can be fairly common at some sites (Lane and Pequeño 2005, Schulenberg et al. 2010).

Effects of human activity on populations

Black Tinamou is dependent upon humid montane forest; the primary threat to this species is loss or fragmenation of this habitat, such as from clearing for agriculture and livestock grazing. At least locally, Black Tinamou also is subject to hunting pressure.
