Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

Black Tinamou is resident in two disjunct areas: in the Andes of Colombia and eastern Ecuador, and also in southeastern Peru and adjacent northwestern Bolivia. The known localities in Colombia include Reserva La Forzosa, in northern Central Andes of Colombia in Antioquia (sight records; Cuervo et al. 2008); the head of the Magdalena Valley in Huila (type locality; Conover 1949); and the east slope of the Eastern Cordillera in southwestern Caquetá (specimen; Cuervo et al. 2008). Black Tinamou only recently was discovered in Ecuador, but now is known from several localities: Shishicho, Sucumbíos (sight records and audio recordings; Schulenberg 2002); the Loreto Road, Napo (sight records and audio recordings; Brinkhuizen and Córdova Saetoros 2011; and Cordillera de Huacamayos, Napo (photo documentation; Brinkhuizen and Córdova Saetoros 2011).

The northernmost localities in Peru are from the Megantoni region, in the upper Urubamba Valley, Cuzco (photo documentation; Lane and Pequeño 2005). There also are recent, unpublished sight records from Parque Nacional Madidi, La Paz, Bolivia.

The elevational range of Black Tinamou in Colombia is 1500-1700 m (Conover 1949, Cuervo et al. 2008); in Ecuador, is 1000-1450 m (Schulenberg 2002, Brinkhuizen and Córdova Saetoros 2011); and in Peru is 900-2100 m (Lane and Pequeño 2005, Walker et al. 2006, Schulenberg et al. 2010).
