Introduction
Enigmatic is often an over-employed adjective, but Black Tinamou undoubtedly qualifies as such. Named only in 1949, the species is seemingly rare and certainly very poorly known throughout its exclusively Andean range, along the east slope discontinuously in Colombia and northeastern Ecuador, and again in southeastern Peru and northwestern Bolivia. The plumage of this tinamou primarily is uniform slaty gray, rather than truly black, and the undertail coverts are conspicuously cinnamon-colored. Black Tinamou inhabits humid forest in the tropical and subtropical zones, at altitudes between 600 and 2100 m. Perhaps surprisingly, given its apparent rarity, one nest of the species has been found, in Peru; it held two eggs, which was perhaps not a complete clutch given clutch sizes in congeners. Almost nothing else is known, however, concerning the life history of Black Tinamou.
