Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

Black-crested Coquette occurs in northern Central America, along the Atlantic slope from southern Mexico (north to southern Veracruz) south to northern Costa Rica (south to the Río Reventazón drainage), and on the Pacific slope in southern Mexico (Chiapas) and Guatemala (Stiles and Skutch 1989, Howell and Webb 1995). In Costa Rica it also is an occasional visitor to the Pacific slope, in the upper Valle Central (Stiles and Skutch 1989).

Black-crested Coquette is mainly resident, but at least in Costa Rica there also altitudinal movements: "descends irregularly, but perhaps not infrequently" (Stiles and Skutch 1989).

The elevational range of Black-crested Coquette in Mexico is from the lowlands up to 1500 m (Howell and Webb 1995), and in Costa Rica is 300-1200 m, although it may breed down to 100 m (Stiles and Skutch 1989).

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to the Americas.

Habitat

Black-crested Coquette occurs at the edge of humid montane and lowland evergreen forests, in forest gaps, and in brushy hedgerows (Stiles and Skutch 1989, Howell and Webb 1995).
