Diet and Foraging

Diet

Black-crested Coquette primarily is nectarivorous, foraging on plants such as Clusia, Cordia, Dipterix, Hampea, Hymenolobium, Norantea and Vochysia (Stiles and Skutch 1989); generally, these coquettes visit "small, typically insect-pollinated flowers on mass-flowering trees" (Stiles and Skutch 1989). Also forage at brushy hedgerows, "especially those with flowering Stachytarpheta" (Stiles and Skutch 1989).

As is typical of hummingbirds generally (Remsen et al. 1983), Black-crested Coquettes also consome small arthropods, which are gleaned in flight from twigs and foliage (Stiles and Skutch 1989).
