Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

The song of Black-cheeked Warbler is described as "a slight, lisping, sputtering jumble of notes, tsi tsi wee tsi tsi wu tsi wee", shorter and weaker than the song of Rufous-capped Warbler (Basileuterus rufifrons) (Stiles and Skutch 1995).

For a representative audio recording with sonogram, see audio

One call of Black-cheeked Warbler is a high, thin tsit; when the bird is alarmed, this call often is given in a rapid series when alarmed or becomes a sputter, followed by a thin whistle: t-t-t-t-tew; (Stiles and Skutch 1995). Another call is a high pit-tew (Stiles and Skutch 1995).

Additional audio recordings of vocalizations of Black-cheeked Warbler can be heard at Macaulay Library, at xeno-canto, and at Internet Bird Collection.

Nonvocal Sounds
