Behavior

Introduction

Little information. Primarily forages on the ground, as do other ground-doves, but readily perches in trees. Also roosts in trees, and the male may sing from "high treetops" (Stiles and Skutch 1989).

Little information on metabolism. Mean body temperature in Brazil for adult males 42.6º C ± 1.0º (n = 45, range 40.4-44.4º C), and for females (all ages) 42.7º C ± 1.1º (n = 49, range 40-44.7º C) (Oniki and Willis 1999).

Territoriality

Sexual Behavior

Little information. Skutch (1959) described an apparent courtship display: a male, perched on a horizontal branch, spread and elevated the tail, drooped the wings, and strutted back and forth. The male also appeared to regurgitate food for the female both before and after copulation.

Social and interspecific behavior

Usually solitary or in pairs, although occasionally in groups of up to 40 (Stiles and Skutch 1989, Howell and Webb 1995).
