Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Black-polled Yellowthroat is resident in a small portion of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt from the Valley of México west to Lago Patzcuaro, Michoacán and Lago Yuriria, Guanajuato (Dickerman 1970). It is currently known from only a few areas in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacán and México, central Mexico (BirdLife International 2014); it is best known from the upper Río Lerma, México, but also is regularly encountered at Lago Cuitzeo, Michoacán, and Lago Pátzcuaro, Michoacán.
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Black-polled Yellowthroat is resident in cattail (Typha sp.) and bullrush (Scirpus sp.) marshes (Dickerman 1970), as well as swamps, floodplains, and highland wetlands. It is less commonly found in marshes with plants in the genera Heleocharis and Cyperus.
Historical changes
Black-polled Yellowthroat apparently is extirpated from Lago Texcoco, México, where it probably went extinct "about 1958, when the northern end [of the lake] was finally drained and planted to crops" (Dickerman 1970: 96). It also has been extirpated from Lago Zumpango, México, where not reported since 1966 (Dickerman 1970, Collar et al. 1992, BirdLife International 2014), and from Presa Solis, Guanajuato, where last reported in 1966 (Collar et al. 1992, BirdLife International 2014).
