Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Blue-throated Goldentail occurs from southern Mexico south to extreme northwestern Colombia, along both slopes. It occurs north to southern Veracruz and eastern Oaxaca (Friedmann et al. 1950, Binford 1989, Howell and Webb 1995). There are few records from Colombia, where it is known only from a few specimens from northern Chocó (Rodríguez 1978, Hilty and Brown 1986). Blue-throated Goldentail is resident throughout most of its range, but may undertake limited movements. The relative abundance of this species varies seasonally at one site in Caribbean Costa Rica (Stiles 1980), and Binford (1989) noted it was recorded in Oaxaca only from winter months (November-December).
The elevational range of Blue-throated Goldentail is from the lowlands up to 1000 in Mexico (Howell and Webb 1995), and to 950 in Costa Rica (Stiles and Skutch 1989); but at least locally in El Salvador, it is reported up to 2000 m (Thurber et al. 1987).
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Blue-throated Goldentail occurs in humid to semihumid forest, second growth forest, and plantations, and, in drier regions, in gallery forest (Stiles and Skutch 1989, Howell and Webb 1995).
