Introduction

Buff-collared Nightjar has a history of colorful names, including Ridgway's Whip-poor-will, Cookacheea, and Prestame-tu-cuchillo (in Spanish, "Please lend me your knife"): these latter two names reflect the bizarre, ascending, mettalic song of this nightjar. Buff-collared Nightjar is found in open habitats, especially dry thornscrub, in western Central America from extreme southern Arizona south through Mexico to Guatemala and Honduras. Southern populations are resident, but this nightjar is present only during summer months in the northern part of its range. Visually, Buff-collared Nightjar species is a small, cryptically patterned nightjar similar to whip-poor-wills with a thin, pale necklace.
