Diet and Foraging
Diet
The diet is little known in detail; most information is based on the contents of 12 martin stomachs (Wetmore 1916). Identifiable insect remains in this sample were:
Hymenoptera (primarily wasps); 33% of the total number of insects
Diptera (flies); 26% of the total number of insects
Heteropteran bugs (Pentatomidae); 24% of the total number of insects, present in 9 stomachs
Odonata (dragonflies); 8% of the total number of insects
Coleoptera (beetles); 8% of the total number of insects, present in 9 stomachs
Orthoptera (cricket, Tridactylidae); 1 individual
Wetmore (1916) also observed Caribbean Martins foraging on swarms of termites (Isoptera).
