Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

Similar to calls of Purple (Progne subis) and Gray-breasted (Progne chalybea) martins.  Voice generally a rich, liquid gurgling including a high-pitched sharp or inflected 'twick-twick'.  Also produce melodious warble or gritty 'churr' (Latta et al. 2006).

Other vocalizations include a contact call 'zwoot'; another contact call, 'kweet,' which also is used in aggressive interactions; a call 'wheet,' used in situations such as the approach to a bird's territory by another martin; a courtship call, 'croot'; a high-pitched alarm call 'peak,' given in the presence of predators; and a mobbing call, 'wrack' (Turner and Rose 1989, Rose 2004).
