Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

The song of Chilean Pigeon is a described as a series of deep hoos, each lasting 1 s, the final syllable slightly drawn out (Whitney, in Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990) or as "a deep doubled hooo-HOOOO hooo-HOOOO hooo-HOOOO ...." (Jaramillo 2003). The song often is preceded with "a long rolling PHRRRRRRRRRR" (Jaramillo 2003), as is typical of Patagioenas.

For a representative audio recording with sonogram, see audio

Additional audio recordings of vocalizations of Chilean Pigeon can be heard at Macaulay Library and at xeno-canto.

Nonvocal Sounds

As is true of many species of large pigeon, the wings of Chilean Pigeon "clap" when the bird takes flight.
