Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Coppery-chested Jacamar is resident in a restricted area on the east slope of the northern Andes. The bulk of the range lies in Ecuador (Collar et a. 1992, Poulsen and Wege 1994, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a), but there are records from a single site each in southeastern Colombia (El Carmen, Nariño; Fitzpatrick and Willard 1982, Hilty and Brown 1986) and in northeastern Peru (upper Rio Comaina, Cordillera del Condor, Amazonas; Schulenberg and Wust 1997, Schulenberg et al. 2010).
The elevational distribution of Coppery-chested Jacamar in Ecuador is ca 750-1500 m (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a). The record from Colombia was at 1600 m (Fitzpatrick and Willard 1982), and the Peru record is from 1430 m (T. Schulenberg, personal observation).
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Coppery-chested Jacamar occurs in the understory of humid montane forest, especially at forest edge, along streams, at treefall gaps, and the edges of landslides (Collar et al. 1992, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001b, Schulenberg et al. 2010).
