Collared Aracari Pteroglossus torquatus
Version: 1.0 — Published October 16, 2017
Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Collared Aracari is resident from from southern Mexico (north to southern Veracruz and northern Oaxaca on the Atlantic slope, and to northern Chiapas on the Pacific slope) south to northern Colombia and northern Venezuela (the Maracaibo Basin, and a disjunct population in eastern Falcón, Yaracuy, and Carabobo); on the Pacific coast, it occurs south through western Colombia and western Ecuador to El Oro, with a few records from adjacent Peru in Tumbes (Angulo et al. 2016). Its distribution is largely continuous on the Atlantic slope. On the Pacific slope, it occurs from southern Mexico south to northwestern Costa Rica (Guanacaste), and again from central Panama to Colombia and Ecuador, but is absent from southwestern Costa Rica and western Panama; in part, it is replaced in this region by the closely related Fiery-billed Aracari (Pteroglossus frantzii).
The elevational range of Collared Toucanet is from sea level up to 1300 m in Mexico and northern Central America (Howell and Webb 1995); up to 1000-1200 m in Costa Rica (Stiles and Skutch 1989); up to 800 m in Colombia (Hilty and Brown 1986); to 1000 m in Venezuela (but most records are below 500 m) (Hilty 2003); and locally up to 1500 m in Ecuador, but usually below 1100 m or, in southern Ecuador, only to 800 m (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a).
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Collared Toucanet occupies lowland evergreen forest and forest edge, advanced secondary forest, and plantations (Hilty and Brown 1986, Stiles and Skutch 1989, Howell and Webb 1995, Parker et al. 1996, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a, Hilty 2003); locally, in semi-arid regions of northern Colombia and in Venezuela, also occurs in gallery forest (Hilty and Brown 1986).
Historical changes
Collared Toucanet is affected by deforestation, and its range has suffered local contractions to do loss of habitat (Stiles and Skutch 1989, Hilty 2003).
