Diet and Foraging

Diet

The Crimson-crested Woodpecker forages largely for insects such as Coleoptera, Isoptera, Lepidoptera (larvae of Pyralidae), and ants (Haverschmidt 1968, Short 1975). Termites may be a possible food, as one female was observed apparently feeding on termites (Kilham 1972). Also consumes some fruit, such as berries of Loranthaceae (Haverschmidt 1968) and "tiny yellow seeds" (Willard et al. 1991).
