Conservation

Conservation Status

The Crested Bobwhite (including the "Spot-bellied Bobwhite") has a has a very wide distribution and their populations appear to be stable or increasing; consequently, the conservation status of the Crested Bobwhite is assessed as Least Concern (BirdLife International 2010).

Effects of human activity on populations

Anthropogenic effects on these quail have not been directly studied yet. However, in Costa Rica the urbanization process occurring in the Central Valley, the most densely populated region of the country, has eliminated many populations of "Spot-bellied Bobwhite" (leucopogon Group), and the remaining populations are habitats are small and isolated from each other (personal observations). In the "Crested Bobwhite" (cristatus Group) it seems that the removal of vegetation due to new practices in agriculture and cattle raising in Venezuela negatively affect populations of this species (Trejo et al. 2008).
