Sounds and Vocal Behavior
Vocalizations
Very vocal, in particular during courtship and aggressive interactions; females may even call at nest. Males give short, croaking whrt, whorr and buzzy wheeeoo (Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990). Females have low, barking, gruff and low nasal quek-quek. Much harsher quacking calls are usual during displays, often with heads thrown up (Woods 1988).
Additional audio recordings of vocalizations of Crested Duck can be heard at Macaulay Library, at xeno-canto, and at Internet Bird Collection.
Nonvocal Sounds
