I am grateful to the Percy Sladen Fund of the Linnean Society of London and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for providing funds in early 2007. Application for funds also were submitted to the William Belton Grant Program of the American Bird Conservancy in August of 2007. I want to thank the American Bird Conservancy for providing funds through Jocotoco Foundation for this investigation. Research and specimen collection permits were issued by the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador to the author as the only investigator, initially in June of 2007; later permits were renewed in 2009. The author is very grateful to Aves & Conservación (Corporación Ornitológica del Ecuador) for providing important logistical support to the expeditions carried out during this study. I am especially grateful to Byron Palacios, Olaf Jahn, Esteban Guevara, Diego Cisneros-Heredia and Sandra Loor-Vela for their input and valuable scientific support on the ecology and distribution of the species. I also want to thank the Herbarium of the University of Guayaquil (GUAY) and to their curators Biologist M. Camba and Dr. C. Bonifaz de Elao for their support with plant identification.
