Diet and Foraging
Diet
There is little information available on the diet of Fire-eyed Diucon. It is primarily insectivorous (Johnson 1967), but the diet is not described in detail. Crawshay (1907) examined the stomach contents of some specimens, where contained beetles, primarily Rhyncophora. Vuilleumier (1994) observed adults feeding on hairy caterpillars, and feeding large caterpillars to nestlings. The diucon also is "not averse" to consuming "wild berries, cherries or grapes" (Johnson 1967), perhaps especially during the austral winter (Ridgely and Tudor 1994).
