Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

Calls given in flight by Fork-tailed Palm-Swifts are described as a trilling trrrrreeeee or as a buzzy d-z-z-z-z-z (Snyder 1966, Hilty and Brown 1986, Hilty 2003) or a thin buzz, bzzzzzzz bzz bzzzzzz (Lane, in Schulenberg et al. 2010). For a representative audio recording with sonogram, see audio.

These calls are sometimes given more rapidly as a frequency of shrieks starts off low and spaced out, but increase as the series of calls plays out.

Audio recordings of vocalizations of Fork-tailed Palm-Swift can be heard at Macaulay Library, at xeno-canto, and at Internet Bird Collection.

Nonvocal Sounds
