Diet and Foraging

Diet

Little is known about the diet of Fulvous Owl. The diet probably includes a mixture of small vertebrates (small mammals, birds, frogs and lizards) and large arthropods (König and Weick 2008). The contents of one stomach were "large insects" (Dickey and van Rossem 1938). A Fulvous Owl was observed attempting to catch a young Highland Guan (Penelopina nigra), and it was hypothesized that they may also prey on Horned Guan (Oreophasis debianus) (González-García 1995). Dickey and van Rossem (1938) found feathers of a Blue-throated Motmot (Aspatha gularis) below the perch of a Fulvous Owl, and inferred that the owl had preyed upon the motmot.
