Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

During the breeding season, approximately November to February, males usually sing from hidden perches in shrubs (1-4 m), sometimes from more exposed perches. Occasionally males sing even in flight while pursuing a conspecific (male of female). They sing a soft, scratchy warble, which sometimes incorporates vocalizations similar to the call, and often with a trill at the end; the song is audible only at close range (<7m). Sings at least until mid-March, but late in the season less frequently and usually only song fragments, not the whole song. Both sexes vocalize with short, buzzy “shrrrt” calls while feeding, or with longer calls while perched.

Nonvocal Sounds

None reported.
