Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

Found in southwestern Haiti on the mainland Tiburon peninsula west of the Jacmel depression, and on three satellite islands: Ile-a-Vache, Ile de la Gonave, and Grande Cayemite (Latta et al. 2006). There are a handful of non-photographed reports of Gray-crowned Palm-Tanager from both sides of the border area with the Dominican Republic (Keith et al. 2003), but these are rare, and cannot be considered confirmed sightings.  Hybrids between Gray-crowned and Black-crowned Palm-Tanagers may occur in the area around the Jacmel depression, but are considered extremely rare, with selection pressures acting against them (McDonald and Smith 1994).

Distribution outside the Americas

Occurs only on Hispaniola.

Habitat

Prefers forests and occurs in all types on Haiti from sea level to the highest forested peaks: scrub, mangrove, second-growth, primary, shaded gardens, agro-forestry, dry forest, wet forest, pine and broadleaf (McDonald and Smith 1994, Latta et al. 2006).

Historical changes

Unknown. It is possible that hybridization is on-going.

Fossil history
