Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

Golden-hooded Tanagers are resident from northern Central America south to northwestern South America. They occur in the Caribbean lowlands from southeastern Mexico (north to Oaxaca, but exclusive of the Yucatan Peninsula) south through northern Guatemala, Belize, Honduras , Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama to the Colombian border (Ridgely and Gwynne 1989, Stiles and Skutch 1989, Howell and Webb 1995). On the Pacific slope, they occur from west central Costa Rica (vicinity of Carara; Stiles and Skutch 1989) and western Panama east to Colombia. In Colombia, Golden-hooded Tanagers occur along the Pacific slope and in adjacent western Ecuador, south to northern Manabí and northern Los Ríos (Hilty and Brown 1986, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001). They also occur in the northern Andes of Colombia, east to the middle Magdalena valley (south to Honda, in northern Tolima; Hilty and Brown 1986).

The elevational range in southern Mexico is from sea level up to 900 m (Howell and Webb 1995). They occur higher farther south, such as up to 1500 m in Costa Rica (Stiles and Skutch 1989) and to 1800 m in Colombia, although there they more commonly are below 1100 m (Hilty and Brown 1986).  In Ecuador, at the southern end of the distribution, the elevational range again is more restricted; it is recorded up to 800 m, but primarily occurs below 500 m (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001).

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to the Americas.

Habitat

The Golden-hooded Tanager primarily occurs at the edge of tropical lowland evergreen forest (Parker et al. 1996). It is found in humid forest, "clearings with scattered trees, semi-open, tall second growth, and shady gardens" (Stiles and Skutch 1989).
