Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

Golden-naped Woodpecker is resident from southwestern Costa Rica (west to the Gulf of Nicoya) to western Panama (Pacific slope of Chiriqui and Veraguas). In Costa Rica it occurs locally up to 1500 m (Stiles and Skutch 1989), and it is reported up to 1200 m in Panama (Ridgely and Gwynne 1989).

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to the Americas.

Habitat

Resident of humid lowland evergreen forest and forest forest; also in second growth and semi-open habitats, as forests are cleared (Wetmore 1968, Skutch 1969, Ridgely and Gwynne 1989, Stiles and Skutch 1989).
