Breeding

Introduction

There is very little information on the reproductive biology of Green-backed Sparrow. Willis observed nest building in Belize in May and June (Russell 1964). Three nests were reported from Campeche, Mexico from late May to early July (Salgado-Ortiz et al. 2001). Only one member of the pair, assumed to be the female, contributed to nest construction, although the second bird remained nearby. The nest is placed on the ground, and is a domed structure with a side entrance. The primary nest components are palm (Sabal mexicana) fibers and bark from a tree (Belotia mexicana), with smaller amounts of pieces of dry fern leaves and dry leaves of shrubs and trees. Mean nest dimensions (n = 3) are: height 10 cm (range 9.5-10.5 cm); width 7.6 cm (range 7.3-8 cm), with a mean width of the entrance of 5.8 cm (range 5.6-6 cm). The clutch is two white unmarked eggs, with mean measurements 26 x 16.5 mm. The length of the incubation and nestling periods are undocumented.
