Mesembrinibis cayennensis is the only member of its genus. The phylogenetic relationships of this genus has not been determined. It has been suggested that Mesembrinibis may be related to the Old World genus Bostrychia because both are solitary, secretive, forest-dwelling bids with dark plumage and crests and similar courtship and reproductive behaviors, but more research is needed (Hancock et al. 1992).
