Introduction

Formerly classified as a mere subspecies of the much more widespread and wholly allopatric Stripe-headed Brush-Finch (Arremon torquatus), Green-striped Brush-Finch is now generally recognized as a distinctive Mexican endemic. It is resident in highland regions of the Pacific slope and the central volcanic belt, at elevations between 1800 and 3500 m. There is no geographical overlap with rather similar Chestnut-capped Brush-Finch (Arremon brunneinucha), which differs from Green-striped in its chestnut crown and black border to the lower edge of the white throat patch. The songs of the two species, however, generally are considered to be rather similar, and the ranges of the two species come close to one another in central Mexico.
