Systematics
Geographic Variation
Within its extremely limited range, there is no known geographic variation in plumage characteristics.
The above summaries and description of Gray-bellied Comet identification draws on the discussions in standard field guides: Fjeldså and Krabbe (1990), Schuchmann (1999), and Schulenberg et al. (2007).
Subspecies
Related Species
Monotypic, the Gray-bellied Comet was originally described as Cynanthus griseiventris (Taczanowski 1883). The genus Taphrolesbia was described by Simon (1918) but its taxonomic position remains uncertain (Schuchmann 1999). It is most probably most closely related to Polyonymus and Sappho (Schuchmann 1999).
