Priorities for Future Research

Introduction

In addition to the obvious gaps noted in this species account relating to molt, predation, nesting phenology, and demographics, the following research needs are identified in the literature.

  1. Evaluate reproductive success in terms of habitat variables to better understand population dynamics and the implications for conservation (Latta et al. 2000, 2002).
  2. Determine the patterns of cone development of Hispaniolan pine (P. occidentalis) and how these patterns affect the population dynamics of Hispaniolan Crossbill (Benkman 1994).
  3. Determine how soil properties and geophagy function in the ecology of Hispaniolan Crossbill (Latta unpubl. ms.).
  4. Investigate the relationship between pine cones and insect communities to evaluate insect intake in nestlings (Latta et al. 2002).
  5. Develop a more accurate measure of the status and distribution of the species and its habitat (BirdLife International 2008).
