Related Species
Formerly considered part of the White-winged Crossbill species complex, Hispaniolan Crossbill was designated as a separate species in 2003 (Banks et al. 2003). The species has been isolated from White-winged Crossbills at least since the Pleistocene (Woods et al. 1992) and at most 680,000 years based on mitochondrial DNA analyses (Parchman et al. 2007). In addition, the Hispaniolan Crossbill differs significantly from the White-winged Crossbill in bill morphology. The bill of the Hipaniola Crossbill is 25% larger than that of the White-winged Crossbill, and is closer in size to the Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra; Benkman 1994, Parchman et al. 2007).
