Breeding

There is little information on the reproductive biology of Least Nighthawk. A specimen in breeding condition was collected on 27 January in Venezuela (on the border with Colombia) (Friedmann 1948); females that recently had laid were collected in Guyana in March-April (Robbins et al. 2004); and a female with a brood patch was collected in Veneuzela in June (Friedmann and Smith 1950). Two nests have been reported in eastern Brazil, in Bahia (late January) and Minas Gerais (mid November), and another nest was discovered in northeastern Argentina in October (Krauczuk 2000). The clutch is a single egg, laid directly on the ground (Krauczuk 2000). Eggs are a dark cream color with underlying lilac smears and brownish red splotches (Oates 1903, Krauczuk 2000); the dimensions of one egg were 27 x 20 mm (Krauczuk 2000).
